Pierz wrestler gets 100th career win

A Pierz sophomore reached a milestone in his high school wrestling career on Thursday night.

Craig Luberts scored his 100th career win when Pierz hosted Big Lake in a Central Minnesota Conference battle. Pierz defeated Big Lake, 57-9, and Luberts accounted for six of the points with a pin during his 135-pound clash with Nick Grecita of Big Lake.

Luberts recorded the pin in the second period (3:36). He was well on the way to the pin in the first period when he got the initial takedown and registered a nearfall before the first period ended.

In addition to Lubert’s fall, other Pioneers who recorded pins over their Hornet opponents were freshman Nathan Janson at 103 pounds in 1:09, freshman Joe Hyatt at 112 in 1:27, sophomore Tony Andres at 130 in 2:13, senior T.J. Marshik at 145 in 3:08, senior Dan Britz at 171 in 1:53, and senior Roy Gall at heavyweight in 2:25.

Pioneers who won on decisions included sophomore Darren Stangl at 119 pounds, 19-14; senior Gene Hyatt at 140, 10-4; and senior Steve Andres at 160, 4-1.

The win for the Pioneers gave them a 7-0 record in the CMC and a 21-3 overall record.

Little Falls wins twice by convincing scores
In a triangular meet in Little Falls, the hosting Flyers trounced the Sartell Sabres, 63-3, and the Sauk Rapids Storm, 46-19.

Against the Sabres, the Flyers got off to a good start when 125-pound senior Trevor Brady recorded a pin at 2:38.

A string of pins followed– senior Matt Boser at 135 in 35 seconds, senior Blake Hunnel at 145 in 1:03, senior Scott Freudenrich at 152 in 1:12, eighth grader Josh Bue at 103 in 31 seconds, and junior Mike Ashby at 112 in 3:29.

The situation was similar for the Flyers against the Storm. Junior Cory Vukelich started things out at 125 with a pin in 50 seconds and Brady followed at 130 with a fall in 23 seconds. Hunnel got a pin at 145 in 1:21, and Bue at 103 in 1:48.
