The county commissioners, at their Tuesday meeting, unanimously approved a donation of $2,000 from the county to the celebration being planned for next August to honor the 75th anniversary of Charles Lindbergh’s flight across the Atlantic.
The approval came only after a concern was expressed by Don Meyer and Bill Block. “I’m not opposed to this, but, this is for the City of Little Falls,” said Meyer. “We contribute nothing to the celebrations held in other communities.” Block added, “What are we going to do if other communities come to us for help for their celebrations?”
Gene Young countered by saying, “I think the whole county will benefit from this event. But, we’ll keep this in mind should other communities ask for assistance.”
In other action, the commissioners:
• Approved the cancellation of the contract whereby Richard and Mary Ann LeMieur were to repurchase tax-forfeited property in the LeMieur Addition. The couple, as noted, have failed to make the installment payments since Dec. 31, 2000;
• Approved raising the amount for burying those whose families cannot afford the costs from $2,096 to $2,450;
• Approved the submission of a grant application in the amount of $10,000 to the MN Department of Safety, through its office of Traffic Safey, for the development of a safe community coalition. The plan is to use the money to continue educating teens about the need to use seat belts;
• Approved a license for Pacific Avenue Pizza of Randall. Owner of the new business is Leonard Witucki;
• Received the treasurer’s report which indicated the county, as of Nov. 27, had $15,481,842 in investments. The payouts on Nov. 30 to towns, cities and schools for the October and November tax settlements will be approximately $2,932,283;
• Approved gambling applications for the Flensburg American Legion at the Corner Bar & Grill in Parker Township, and the Hillman American Legion Post at both the Ramey Store and the Grub and Pub;
• Approved the use of electronic monitoring for some juvenile corrections clients; and,
• Approved an amendment to the 2002/2003 CSSA Plan which permits the county to seek a waiver from including day treatment services for children in its plan.
