Students of the Month named at Pierz High School

The April Students of the Month at Pierz Healy High School have been announced. They are Jennifer Young and Amanda Meyer. The faculty committee made the selection based on academics, citizenship, leadership ability and involvement in school organizations. Both are active in extracurricular activities while maintaining high grade point averages, including college course
work.

“Amanda has been a very good student in both the college level psychology and sociology courses I instruct,” commented teacher Frank Weber. “Amanda excels in group work where she can get others to share thoughts and ideas they have difficulty expressing. She has a way of making difficult tasks enjoyable, which makes her someone people like to work with.”

Weber went on to describe her as intense and competitive. “This makes her an important part of teams. Her personality and abilities made her a significant player on the very successful volleyball and basketball teams Pierz has produced during her high school years.”

A three-sport athlete, Meyer captained the volleyball team, played basketball and softball. She is a member of SADD, Drama Club, Letter Club and co-anchors the morning announcements at school. As a junior, she attended Girls State sponsored by the Pierz American Legion Auxiliary Unit 341.

Next fall she plans to attend Central Lakes College in Brainerd to acquire an associate of arts degree and play volleyball. After that, she intends to transfer to a four-year college to pursue a career in the medical field.

In her spare time the daughter of Marilyn and David Meyer works at Hartmann’s and Subway. Making it to state in basketball this year ranks among her best school memories, along with a trip last year with classmates to Washington D.C. and New York City.

Jenny Young agrees her study tour this spring of the Nation’s Capitol and New York was most unforgettable. She enjoys traveling and also lists parasailing in Florida while on vacation with the family as a lot of fun.

In addition to regular senior studies, Young attends Central Lakes College half of the school day and works part-time. “I am employed at St. Gabriel’s Hospital/St. Otto’s in the nutrition services department, “ she noted. “I was involved in 4-H outside of school. I enjoy spending time with friends and family, rollerblading, playing piano and being outdoors.”

In-school activities include SADD, Yearbook Newspaper and Business Professionals of America, of which she’s secretary. She’s proud-of placing in management concepts and medical concepts at this year’s BPA contests. The achievements reflect positively on her career goal.

“I plan on attending Sister Rosalind Gefre’s School of Professional Massage in Mankato to become a massage therapist,” she said. Jeanne Bielejeski, Spanish 11 teacher, feels she is headed for success based on her high school record.

“I’ve only known Jenny this past year, but I think that she is making the most out of her high school years at Healy High,” she said. “Jenny is a serious student who takes advantage of the opportunities offered to her and her classmates. She does an excellent job from the beginning to the end. She’s responsible and dependable in and out of the classroom.”

Jenny’s parents are Robert and Mary Jo Young. She and Amanda are now eligible for Student of the Year honors to be announced Wednesday, May 17 at the annual awards night scheduled for 8 p.m. in the high school gym. Farmers and Merchants State Bank of Pierz, program sponsors, will be announcing winners of two $1,000 scholarships at that time.
